"The Hanging Castle" [Margaret's Castle]

Margaret's Castle is a castle in Ardglass , County Down , Northern Ireland . It is a small Tower house probably built in the 15th century . Only two storeys still exist but there is evidence that it was at least three storeys high. It is vaulted above the ground floor with a rectangular tower with projecting turrets in the north west wall. The doorway between the turrets was protected by a murder-hole. A spiral stairway rises within the west turret.

In the floor of the turret chamber is a trap-door by means of which an unlighted, and apparently featureless basement chamber, presumably a prison, could be reached
.

It is rumoured locally that in the past hanging's took place here and that bodies were taken to the now Ardglass golf club to be buried in lime pits -ancient texts denote that upon digging up the floor to examine the foundations, heaps of human bone were found there - clearly some nasty things have gone on here in the past!

Chris Avern is a key holder to Margaret's castle as it directly adjoins his B&B, so if you're lucky enough he may just open it for you to have a private peek at this dark historic monument to Ardglass' past.
